In October 2026, there are three main Apple Watch families to choose from: SE 3, Series 12 and Ultra 4. The model with the most features is not necessarily the best buy: what matters is how you plan to use the watch, how important longer battery life is, and whether its size will be comfortable for you. The comparison below can help you narrow down your options without paying for features you are unlikely to use.
Quick picks: which model is right for whom?
| Model | Choose it if… | Main difference |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch SE 3 | you mainly want to check notifications and track daily activity, workouts and sleep | 40 or 44 mm aluminium case; up to 18 hours of normal use, according to Apple |
| Apple Watch Series 12 | you want a versatile everyday watch with more health and workout features | 42 or 46 mm aluminium and titanium cases, or 43 or 47 mm ceramic cases; up to 24 hours of normal use |
| Apple Watch Ultra 4 | you do a lot of sport or hiking, or longer battery life and a larger design matter to you | 49 mm titanium case; up to 50 hours of normal use, plus outdoor and sports features specific to Ultra |
Battery-life figures are values provided by Apple, not guaranteed daily results. Actual battery use also depends on your settings and how you use the watch. You can review the detailed specifications in the Apple Watch model comparison.
Apple Watch SE 3: when the essentials are enough
The SE 3 can be a good starting point if the smartwatch will mainly be an accessory to your phone. Want to check notifications, record walks or workouts, track daily activity and see sleep data? This is the model to consider first for those uses. Apple’s specifications also list an Always-On display, a sleep score and sleep apnoea notifications; the device is available in 40 and 44 mm sizes. Find out more in the SE 3 technical specifications.
The SE 3 may be the right choice if these features cover your needs and you are not looking for every option listed on the more expensive families’ specification pages. For example, if the ECG app is not important to you, one of the main differences that might lead you to the Series 12 will matter less. Apple quotes up to 18 hours of battery life with normal use, so it is also worth considering whether charging every day fits into your routine.
Apple Watch Series 12: a versatile middle ground
The Series 12 may be a good choice for people who want additional health and sports features alongside everyday notifications and activity tracking. Apple’s specifications list, among other things, an ECG app, a Blood Oxygen app, hypertension notifications and the Vitals app. These features do not in themselves provide a medical diagnosis and are not a substitute for consulting a healthcare professional.
According to Apple’s technical specifications, the Series 12 aluminium and titanium versions come in 42 and 46 mm sizes, while the ceramic version is listed in 43 and 47 mm case sizes. Apple quotes up to 24 hours of normal use. That is a longer stated figure than for the SE 3, but do not focus only on the number of hours when buying: think about how often you work out, whether you use the display a lot or cellular features, and when you can charge the watch. Check the exact features and sizes in the Series 12 technical specifications.
If possible, try the watch on before choosing a size. A larger display can show more information, but the case width and weight affect how comfortable the watch feels on your wrist – especially while you sleep or during a longer workout. If you are choosing between two sizes, do not look only at the display: how it fits on your wrist and how comfortable the band is matter too.
Apple Watch Ultra 4: when you will really make use of the larger design
The Ultra 4 is worth serious consideration if you exercise or hike regularly and would find the 49 mm titanium case, customisable Action button, dual-frequency GPS or longer battery life useful. Apple quotes up to 50 hours of normal use and up to 84 hours in Low Power Mode. Ultra models have a water-resistance rating of 100 metres; check the manufacturer’s description for details of water activities and usage restrictions before buying. Find more details about the model in the Ultra 4 technical specifications.
The larger case and sports-oriented design are not advantages for everyone. If you would mainly use the watch for notifications, daily activity and occasional workouts, the Ultra’s extras may not be worth the cost for your needs. Ask yourself: would I regularly use the longer battery life, outdoor features or larger case? If the answer is mostly no, consider the smaller models too.
Check these four things before buying
- Is it compatible with your iPhone? According to Apple’s compatibility information, Series 12 and Ultra 4 require an iPhone 11 or later and iOS 27. Apple’s pages give a different iOS version for the SE 3, so the safest approach is to check that your own phone is compatible and update its software before buying. Find out more in Apple’s compatibility guide.
- Do you need GPS or GPS + Cellular? If you want your watch to connect to a mobile network without your iPhone in some situations, look at the Cellular version. First check that your mobile provider supports Apple Watch service and what conditions apply to the watch and iPhone. The options are explained in Apple’s cellular guide.
- Are the size and material right for you? The SE 3 is 40 or 44 mm; the Series 12 aluminium and titanium versions are 42 or 46 mm, its ceramic version is 43 or 47 mm, and the Ultra 4 is 49 mm. With the Series 12, the choice of material is also part of the decision. If you can, try on both the size and the band.
- What are the current price and availability in Hungary? Prices and stock may vary by retailer. Before buying, check the current local range and compare models in the same size and similar configurations.
In summary: choose based on how you will use it
Choose the SE 3 if you need essential smartwatch functions and activity and sleep tracking. Choose the Series 12 if you are looking for a versatile everyday watch and additional health or workout features matter to you. Choose the Ultra 4 if its larger titanium design, outdoor features or longer battery life genuinely suit your habits.
Once you have an idea of which family interests you, compare the size, specific features and iPhone compatibility in the current model comparison before buying. That way, you can make your decision based on the differences that matter to you, not just the model names.
Availability of health and cellular features depends on the country, provider, software and model. Before buying, also check whether the feature in question is available in Hungary.
